Majors in Areas Outside of Business
The B.S. in Business Administration, Marketing, and Management
are programs that will meet the needs of many students interested
in careers in a variety of business fields. For some students,
however, a program in an area outside of business might
make sense.
Already have a bachelor’s degree in a different
area?
It usually doesn’t make sense to do a second bachelor’s
degree in business. Instead, consider a Masters of Business
Administration degree (M.B.A.) which will provide a stronger
credential and may not take much longer to complete than
a second bachelor’s degree. Follow the link for more
information about the Metropolitan State University College
of Management M.B.A.
Close to earning a bachelor’s degree with
a different major?
You may want to finish a bachelor’s degree and then
pursue an M.B.A. Again, this route might not take longer
than switching direction to do a bachelor’s degree
in business. While completing the other bachelor’s
degree, you can take courses that will meet M.B.A. prerequisites.
Follow the link for more information about the prerequisites
for the College
of Management M.B.A.
Need a bachelor’s degree, but the major is
not important?
If completing a bachelor’s degree as quickly as possible
is important to you, and you have lots of previous credits
in a variety of areas (perhaps 90+ semester credits), especially
in areas outside of business, you may want to consider doing
an individualized B.A. degree through Metropolitan State
University’s First College. This route enables students
to work with advisors to plan their own personally tailored
degree that makes use of past courses and adds other courses
to meet individual goals. Especially if you have not yet
completed college algebra, statistics, economics, accounting,
or other courses required for the B.S. in Business Administration,
you may be able to finish a First College individualized
degree much more quickly than you can complete a B.S. in
Business Administration. Some students will include M.B.A.
prerequisite courses in their individualized program, and
then go on to an M.B.A. after the individualized program
in order to advance their business education. Please review
First
College programs for more information.
Don’t like math, statistics, or business
courses?
If you enjoy and do well in courses in other areas but you
don’t enjoy math, statistics, or other quantitative
courses, or if you don’t find other business courses
interesting, consider choosing a major more closely related
to your interests and abilities. Many students with majors
outside of business find jobs in business settings, while
others find that careers in other areas are more attractive.
