General
Education and Liberal Studies Requirements (GELS)
To complete any bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan
State University, you must complete the general education
and liberal studies requirements in effect when you are
admitted to the university. GELS courses provide a breadth
of education to help you become a more educated person and
develop the skills needed for advanced coursework. GELS
also help you to develop a variety of strategies for learning,
understanding, and solving problems. GELS requires at least
48 semester credits. Forty of those credits can be lower
division (freshman- or sophomore-level courses) or upper
division (junior- or senior-level courses), selected to
meet specific requirements or goal areas. At least 8 credits
must be in upper-division courses that can be taken from
any general education area.
You can complete the General Education requirements for
the B.S. degree by:
- Completing the A.S. in Business degree at a partner
institution by following the MnTC requirements.
- Completing the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC)
at any other Minnesota college.
- Completing an Associate in Arts (A.A. degree) from
any Minnesota community college.
- Taking individual courses approved to meet specific
MnTC goal areas or Metropolitan State general education
requirements from any accredited college or university.
Several of the Business Foundation courses required for
a College of Management major can also apply towards GELS
requirements and/or electives, so you will want to be sure
that you understand how these requirements overlap.

When you are admitted to Metropolitan State, the admissions
office will send you a GELS worksheet specifying the GELS
requirements that you must satisfy. This worksheet will
tell you how previous college coursework will apply to the
GELS requirements. For students admitted to Metropolitan
State spring 2003 or later, the general education categories
match the goal areas specified by the Minnesota Transfer
Curriculum, a common set of general education goals shared
by the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State College
and University systems.
Some courses required to complete the Metropolitan State
GELS are offered online through partner institutions, and
some courses are offered online through Metropolitan State.
Once you are admitted and your transcripts have been evaluated
an advisor will work with you to develop an academic plan.
