ROILs (Recording of Other Institutional
Learning)
|
Students may take
courses elsewhere
(after matriculating
at Metropolitan
State), and have
them rolled into
their degree
programs here.
Check with an
academic advisor
first, since
Metropolitan
State Advisor
Approval forms
must be completed
before registering
elsewhere. Students
then register
at the other
school as a "special"
or "continuing
education"
student and pay
tuition there.
After satisfactory
grades are entered,
students request
that an official
transcript be
sent directly
to Metropolitan
State for recording
here. Note that
ROILs do not
count toward
residency requirements.
Please view the course
equivalency chart to determine what courses
are pre-approved as equivalent from Minneapolis
Community Colleges since Fall 1998.

CLEP
(College Level Examination Program)
|
CLEP tests are
a low-cost way (approximately $58) to earn college
credit. Students study independently and take
the tests at Metropolitan State’s Testing
Centers (651-772-7730). Study materials and
other information are available at public libraries,
via www.collegeboard.org
(select directory services) or via www.amazon.com
(search on CLEP). Some CLEP tests are equivalent
to COM courses, while others may be used for
GELS or Free Electives. After passing the test(s),
students request that an official transcript
be sent directly to Metropolitan State. (Your
advisor will tell you which office to send it
to.) Note that CLEP tests do not count toward
residency requirements.

Waivers
|
Waiver examinations
are available for MIS 100, Econ 201, Econ 202,
Acct 210, or Acct 320. If you have previous
experience or previous course work that didn't
transfer for these courses, you may take a free
waiver examination to test out of the course.
You can take the waiver examination for a course
only once. You will not receive credits for
passing the exam, but you will have fulfilled
the course requirement and will not have to
take the course.

Internships
|
Internships are for students
interested in obtaining new learning through
hands-on experience. Internships may be used
to meet GELS requirements, as free electives,
or as major electives (if approved by the appropriate
department chair). Hundreds of internships are
already set up through Metropolitan State, or
they may be student-designed. Sites may be new
to the student, at the student's workplace (except
not in student's family owned business), or
as part of a volunteer experience. (No accounting
or finance internships may be done for credit.)
Some internships pay; others do not. Students
intern a minimum of 120 hours per 3 semester
credits or 160 hours per 4 semester credits
earned. For more information, refer to the Internship
Handbook, available from the Center for Community-Based
Learning (651-772-7788), and attend a free Internship
Workshop offered most terms.

Prior Learning
|
Students may earn
college credit for learning gained through past
experience. Prior learning must have both theoretical
and practical components. Attend a free Creative
Learning Strategies Workshop to help identify
significant college-level learning acquired
through life and work experience, and to identify
appropriate resident or community faculty who
may evaluate whether the student's knowledge
constitutes college-level learning. For Priors
in the College of Management (COM), refer to
"Assessment of Prior Experiential Learning
in the College of Management" for step-by-step
instructions. The handout is available in the
COM Advising Center (612-341-7437).

FDIS (Faculty Designed Independent Study)
|
Students may pursue study of a subject area
independently. FDISs are available in many subject
areas, as listed in Metropolitan State's Catalog
and Class Schedule. FDIS registration may or
may not require the instructor's permission.
Unless noted otherwise, contact the instructor
after registering, to be sent a syllabus with
course completion instructions. Some FDISs require
one or more group meetings with the instructor.
FDIS work must be completed no later than 140
days from registration or the beginning of the
term, whichever occurs later. Some independent
study courses are Web-enhanced or offered mainly
through the Internet. Please contact the instructor
to find out how the Independent Study is designed.

SDIS (Student Designed Independent Study)
|
Students may independently
pursue introductory or advanced studies not
otherwise available at Metropolitan State. An
SDIS allows individual work with a faculty member
to create and pursue an independent study of
interest. Learn how to locate a faculty member
and develop an SDIS by attending a free Creative
Learning Strategies Workshop, offered most terms.
