Registration Tips
Know when to plan for registration.
Make a tentative course plan several semesters in advance.
Then plan registration with your advisor several weeks before
registration starts. Advising is very busy the week before
registration starts and usually during the first week or
two of registration, so it may be more difficult to get
help promptly.
Know what to register for.
The First
Term Registration Planner (pdf) and Long-term
Registration Course Planner (pdf) are tools to help
you decide what courses you will take each term. Write in
the courses you plan to take each semester, paying careful
attention to any prerequisites you need to complete. Complete
all required math, reading, and writing assessments before
registration. Understand what previous course work will
meet Metropolitan State or a partner institution course
requirements for your degree and major. Complete your orientation
requirements. Decide on any alternative
learning strategies you would like to pursue. Know your
degree and major requirements. Get help from an advisor.
Know your course prerequisites.
Course prerequisites prepare you to be successful in your
advanced courses. It is required that you follow any prerequisite
requirements before being allowed to register for certain
classes. Prerequisites are listed in the course descriptions
in the catalog and Web site. These should be taken early.
Know when to register.
Be prepared to register at the earliest possible time
for best course selection. Your time to register can be
found in your class
schedule. Students will be given registration priority
based on the total credits earned. To calculate your total
credits, add any transfer coursework to those courses in
which you have already earned a passing grade.
Know the number of courses you can handle.
Online doesn't mean less time. Online courses give you
flexibility, but you still need to plan enough time to get
into your online course, read the discussions, and study.
You can expect to study 2 to 3 hours for each credit of
class. A 4-credit course equals about 8-12 hours of homework
a week. Most full-time working students find that one or
two courses per term is a full load.
Know how to register.
Each campus offers a variety of methods for registration.
As an online student, you most likely will choose to register
via the Web. Registration procedures are in the class schedule,
as well as the campus Web sites.
Registration procedures and policies
Learn about Metropolitan State's policies regarding drop,
add, withdraws, tution deadlines and more from the Web
Class Schedule. Contact a
partner institution directly for information related
to their institution's procedures and policies.
Repeat Course Policy
Students may repeat courses or other learning in which
they receive grades of D, F or no competence. If learning
is repeated, both the grade and R are recorded on the transcript.
If learning is repeated once, only the higher grade is used
in computing the grade point average. If learning is repeated
more than once, the grade point average includes all attempts
after the first one. Students who receive a grade higher
than a D may not repeat the learning, except as an auditor,
without the approval of the dean of the college or school.
The student or advisor will need to fill out a Repeated
Course Form and submit it to the registration office
or records office.
Stopping Out/Taking
Time Off
It may be necessary for a student to take some time away
from school to attend to personal business. Please be aware
that a student who has not enrolled in courses for over
3 years is considered no longer enrolled at the University
and must apply for readmission.
